What shoes can do to your feet…

Posted on July 29, 2014 by kmwohl@theloveofshoes.com Posted in Uncategorized .

Skimming the web this morning I saw an article about the 5 shoes you should not wear this summer – and 2 of my must haves were on the list! I felt a bit of panic that I have inadvertently advised women to purchase shoes that can do the foot harm, but I‘d have to say that there are a lot of shoes out there that can do harm to the feet. I do feel vindicated since I do provide variations for the must haves and information on how to make shoes more comfortable. So, to summarize the article:

Understand what the following types of shoes can do to you before purchasing:

Flatforms

flatformBest described as a ballet flat meets platform shoes. A flatform is a raised bottom that is consistent from front to back. It puts the shoe literally on a platform. This type of shoe was on the scene in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.

The intent of the flatform is to make the traditional platform more comfortable and easily wearable. The reason this shoe is on the list is that they elevate the wearer by the height of the platform and this can make the wearer unstable. It restricts the movement of the ankle joint and alters the natural walking motion. The effects of this can be felt in back pain, ankle problems and potentially next pain. One other result is there is increased work needed by the stabilizing muscles of the body. The down side, potential pain and   straining of muscles; the upside – toner muscles (but this could take a lot of wearing to see).

Best advice if you like this style: wear occasionally, and try to avoid wearing multiple days in a row.

Mulesbocwedge

The article lumped mules, clogs and slides together, but the main issue here is that these shoes are backless and that makes them potentially bad. The pressure is pushed to the heel and not the ball of the foot. Because the shoe is backless, your foot has room to move around and slide forward putting added pressure on the toes. Additionally, your toes naturally grab at the sole of a shoe when you walk, so over time, a backless shoe puts you at risk for hammertoes.

Best advice if you like this style: wear occasionally, and try to avoid wearing multiple days in a row.

One of my favorites and on the must have list: The Ballet Flat

orangebowflatAlthough a flat, most ballet flats are completely flat with no heel at all. The result, many do not provide enough support to the average wearing. Many experience foot discomfort and have developed plantar fasciitis. For those who have experienced plantar fasciitis, it is very painful and takes a long time to heal.

Best advice if you like this style: add orthotics or some other arch support and try to avoid wearing multiple days in a row.

The second shoe on the must have list and on this list, is the flip flop. For years there have been warnings about wearing flip flops. Many people experience heel and arch pain from flip flops. If you wear then responsibly, then they can remain a summer staple.blue-flipflop

Best advice if you like this style: know that they do not have good arch support, avoid walking long distances in them and with all shoes, avoid wearing multiple days in a row.

Kitten Heels

ellentracy-lowheelThe last on this list is the kitten heel. Per the article the issue with this shoe is the safety (getting the heel stuck in a sidewalk crack because it is thin) and then added pressure on the toes and ankle due to the raised heel. For me, the issue with the kitten heel is more stability driven. The heel of the shoe is usually short and thin and sits directly under the heel of the foot. This can make the shoe a bit wobbly for the wearer.

Best advice if you like this style: wear occasionally, and try to avoid wearing multiple days in a row.

Overall, there are very few stylish shoes out there that are “good” for your feet. When shopping, always make sure the shoe fits properly. If you need something specific (arch support, orthotics, etc…), get that. If you want fun flirty shoes go for style but make sure you understand how and how often you should wear them.

Good luck!

Spring 2014 Trends

Posted on March 5, 2014 by kmwohl@theloveofshoes.com Posted in Uncategorized .

So having noted that the Fall 2014 collections just finished their run during New York Fashion week, I thought it might be prudent to note what was happening for Spring 2014. So, here’s what to look for:

In the shape department – We are seeing lots of geometric or architectural form. These lines will make the foot look longer and leaner. Although reported earlier that platforms/wedges were out, it appears not, and there are lots of new styling and detail on the sides providing an added dimension. A bit later we’ll talk about the variations on the traditional T-strap and ankle strap and pointy toes are in (woo hoo one of my favorites!)

Material/Fabrication – The dominant material for shoes remains leather, but there are lots of man-made materials used in manufacturing shoes. In addition to leather, suede, patent leather and embossed or printed motifs and textures are prevalent. I have not been a big fan of suede in the summer, but in certain styles, I’ve come around to it.

There are many different man-made materials including stretch micro fibers, elastic strapping, jutes and canvas. Animal prints are still in – look for a variety of colorful snake and lizard prints from natural colors to very unnatural colors!

Snakeskin is in! – Look for snakeskin sandals in every color of the rainbow this year. Snake-embossed leather is much more common and reasonably priced compared to the real thing, but printed man-made materials are also popular.

Graphic printed shoes – A new method of printing or embossing color and texture onto leathers and suede’s creates new and exciting looks. From geometric designs to abstract, prints are great options. I would suggest that print shoes work best when paired with solid apparel, so that they stand out as a great fashion statement piece that they are. Tie-dye prints will also be popular.

Sheer – There were lots of sheer options on the runways for Spring. Netted mesh and see-through plastic, lace and other sheer fabrics allow a peak of skin and a seriously cool look. A leather bootie is not a great option in the heat of summer or a hot Spring afternoon, but add mesh or sheer fabric and it instantly looks breezy light and awesome!

DETAILING – Lots and lots of detailing! From embellishments to strapping look for it everywhere! Straps especially at or around the ankle; buckle, wrap, tie or use Velcro closures, they are most prominent above the instep and below the ankle.

The Ankle Strap Pump – A staple shoe and a favorite shoe for me gets a small but significant change for Spring. Add a sleek and skinny ankle strap to this classic and it becomes new, fresh and a bit sexy. Still completely appropriate for the office, but they can carry you right through to nights out with the girls or that significant other.

The Gladiator – Still hot for Spring 2014, the gladiator trend continues. First out in spring/summer 2008 it’s back but not as prominent. You’ll see this style in sandals and booties.

Appliqués/Flowers – These are in abundance for spring. Appliqués are seen in trims added to toes, heels, sides and straps. Added flowers of all shapes and sizes in contrasting or monochrome color look for these in a variety of materials. The flowers range from subtle to a veritable bouquet. Regardless of the size these add elegance and femininity.

Metal is being used to trim many parts of the new shoes, especially straps and highlights on the instep of many styles. Jewels shoe up often as trim ornamentation on new shoes; they are used to set off unique shapes as well as add ornamentation to basic styles.

Laser cutouts are everywhere; they began several seasons ago and are now popular in most brands where they not only add patterns to otherwise plain leather but also create breathability for cooler wearability.

Studded – Studded boots that were popular for fall will flow over into summer in studded shoes and sandals. We’re seeing metal studs, big buckles and shiny zippers. These edgy embellishments portray a rock ‘n roll flavor, but if that’s not you, pair with romantic ruffled tops and other floral, feminine pieces to tone it down.

Beaded – Beading adds interest by changing colors or shades of color the shoe. These ornately beaded works of footwear border on art.

Funky Embellishments – For the past couple seasons, wild embellishments have been a designer standby and we’re seeing a wealth of extravagant and unique embellishments this season that are taking the classic shoe and turning it into a statement maker. As awesome as these shoes are, they may not stay around so my advice is to keep this a single purchase.

Tribal Influences – We’re seeing a variety of thong sandals dressed up with tribal influence or Native American-inspired beading.

HEELS – For 2014 we’re seeing lots of different heel types; thick, chunky heels, architectural heels, and crystal-encrusted heels. Lots of attention will be going to the back of the shoe this season, so wear these shoes with your favorite dresses or cropped pants to show off all the details.

FLATS – The must haves for travel and day wear are all the new shapes encompassed into flats or very low heels and wedges. They can be ballet flats with rounded or pointy toes, moccasins, loafers or sandals sporting closed, open or peep toes. Sling back straps, side cut outs and other options abound.

SUMMER/CUT OUT BOOTIES – Bootie’s are a staple and wearing a chunky pair with a light and airy sundress is great, lighter versions are a necessity. This Spring, you’ll see a variety of styles that have a bootie silhouette that show some skin by way of cutouts, open sides, peep-toes, and exposed heels.

MULES – Backless shoes are a trend everyone can rock, as they come in a myriad of heights. Sleek styles add polish to all kinds of looks. It’s one of those shoes that can translate from the runway to the everyday woman’s closet. They work equally well in the office and with a casual outfits.

SPORTY – We’ve seen sneakers on the runway before, but the variety of styles this year were inspired by outdoor activities. There were flat booties that looked eerily similar to water socks and strappy, nylon sandals that could’ve passed as classic Tevas, but they were still sneakers. Use of athletic materials such as perforated leather, woven nylon and neoprene shows that one of the hottest trends of Spring 2014 is combining urban style with luxury.

COLOR – The staples black and brown aren’t going away, but after this long winter, color is indeed needed. A variety of reds, greens, blues and oranges in all types of shades and combinations, will be popular. Navy looks to be big this year as well. Don’t forget metallic’s they’re in all the new shades! In addition the colors above, 2 are worthy enough to call out on their own:

Placid Blue – An icy-toned blue is a top picks for the Spring 2014 season. Dubbed “placid blue,” the hue has a calming and serene quality about it. It’s used as both the main color and as an accenting neutral.

Freesia – A blazing yellow the color of electric citrus, a smoldering sun. This color will energize you.  This will certainly add a kick to an outfit!

So much to think about and so many great new styles to try! And in case you were wondering, Orchid (in the purple family) is the newest spring color for clothing. Keep that in mind when out shopping for new spring and summer shoes!

New York Fashion Week 2014

Posted on February 8, 2014 by kmwohl@theloveofshoes.com Posted in Uncategorized .

Did you know that it’s New York Fashion Week? Well it just started and they are showcasing what we’ll be seeing in the fall of 2014. I know, it’s a long way off and I’d really like to get into some warmer weather and all the great sandals, but it’s interesting to see what’s going to be on trend next fall. So far, it looks like boxier styles, deep jewel tone hues, leather and low hemlines. There was a bit of fur, wintery velvet, metallics, classic silhouettes and sparkle (aka bling). There were lots of classic shoes and some chunky footwear. Coach has come out with a ready to wear line that has promise and isn’t covered in “C’s”. It will be interesting to see what trickles down from the runways for the everyday folk and fun to see what the rest of the week will bring.

As a side note, SJP, Sara Jessica Parker’s shoe line is out! Check out the classic styles and great colors, they’re going to be great with the fall fashion!

How to Wear Thigh High Boots

Posted on January 14, 2014 by kmwohl@theloveofshoes.com Posted in Uncategorized .
Big on the 2013 runways and a trend this year with many designers are thigh-high boots. So how do you take this great style and translate into your wardrobe while still looking high-style?

Below are  a couple of ways to wear thigh high boots and still look totally chic, as opposed to looking like you’re out, um… you know.

1. Keep your clothes loose and kinda unflattering – Regardless of how you wear it, thigh-high boots add sex appeal to whatever you are wearing. For this reason, you can pull off a boxy shift or oversized shapeless sweater. Something less than flattering will balance out the inherent sexiness of the shoe style.

2. Dark on bottom, layered on top –  For thigh-high boots that are skin tight, be sure to wear them with opaque tights, leggings, or dark skinnies, which leaves you plenty of room to add volume and texture on top. Add color, play with layers, or throw on a bright statement bag. This will help to keep the look chic.

3. Think Monochromatic – This will draw attention away from the severity of the style, and add a subtle touch of high-fashion drama without screaming it from the rooftops. Hue-on-hue layer is great here.

4. Long coats and Short Skirts – One way to rock this look is to use an overcoat or long trench coat that allow you sport a variety sorts of short, tight, sexy bottoms if you want to. The long cut of the coat slims and adds a touch of chic the look.  If you opt for tight on the bottom, keep things a bit looser on the top.

10 Annoying Shoe Problems & Solutions

Posted on November 25, 2013 by kmwohl@theloveofshoes.com Posted in Uncategorized .

1. Too Tight Straps

Leather straps stretch with wear, but for those you can’t wait to stretch out on their own, simply rubbing with water can shorten the breaking-in process. After rubbing with water, slip the shoe on and let dry. The leather will mold to the shape of your foot.

2. Blisters

Blisters are caused by friction so any shoe that is a little loose can cause a blister to form. Likely areas are heels and soles of the feet. To limit the possibility of blisters, add moleskin or inserts that can absorb the friction.

3. Arch Pain

This is usually caused by shoes that do not properly support the middle of your foot. You can stick to shoes that provide adequate support, opt for wedges over thin heels or add supportive inserts. Additionally, stick to heels under 3 inches (probably not going to happen for me).

If this becomes too big of a problem you may have to go to orthotics – take care your feet ladies, this is not where you want to end up!

4. Sweaty Feet

Many causes here – man made materials don’t always allow the foot to “breathe,” shoes that are too small can cause your feet to sweat increasing the likely hood of blisters or it’s simply your body chemistry. Best way to get a good fitting shoe – go shoe shopping at the end of the day to compensate for swollen or tired feet. Stick to natural materials or materials that breathe to help keep air circulating around the foot, and sprinkle baby powder in your shoes to help keep your feet dry.

5. Cuts on the Back of Your Heels

While you may think your shoes are too tight, the problem is more likely that they’re too big. Extra room allows for the foot to shift and slide within the shoe and the biggest reason for cuts. Try adding heel pads to the back of your shoes. The cushion will help keep the foot in place and reduce or eliminate rubbing that causes the cuts.

6. Calluses

To ease the cause of calluses start with a well-fitting shoe. Avoid shoes that are too tight. Wear socks or tights to help reduce friction. If you already have calluses, get pedicure or try any of the many home options and moisturize your feet often.

7. Heels Sinking into Grass

Stilettos and outdoor functions (on grass) do not go well together. Opt for a wedge or flat. If neither appeal to you, try getting heel caps that enlarge the heel base that will assist in keeping your heel above ground.

8. Scuffed Leather

There are a couple of options here – wear the good shoes indoor where they are less likely to get scratched, or make sure that they are well taken care of. Polishing your shoes will help keep scratches from forming.

9. Wobbly Heels

This is usually caused by you – rocking back and forth in your shoes weakening the attachment of the heel to the sole. Some shoes have a sturdy metal shank that connects the inner sole to the heel, but not all. If your heels do detach, a cobbler can reattach for a reasonable price. Ade points out. If heels do detach, a cobbler can reattach them for about $20-which may or may not be worth it depending on the original shoe cost.

10. Soles Wearing Off

If you have a favorite pair of shoes, the more likely you are to wear holes into the soles of your shoes. Dressier shoes often times have thinner soles where this can occur with less wear. You have options – you can get sole protectors add a layer of protection and are slop resistant; go to a cobbler and have them add rubber sole for comfort and longevity; or limit the outdoor time you give your shoes.

Wish List

Posted on November 3, 2013 by kmwohl@theloveofshoes.com Posted in Uncategorized .
It’s getting close to the holidays and the weather is getting colder. A friend commented that it can’t be winter until you buy boots and a sweater. Check – bought boots (Tahari black micro fiber tall boots) and a sweater (a soft pink and super cozy).
 isolapump
Okay, so winter can officially arrive for me and with that comes some great new fall/winter shoes. “Window shopping” on-line at Macys.com and I find these Isola Isabel Pumps in red. OMG!!! These are spectacular shoes. They offer a great contrast with the majority of the vamp in red suede and an animal print section that comes across the top of the foot. These will be great with pants and even better with skirts. At just over $100, they are a bit pricey and certainly over my $40 limit, but with a 20% coupon, I’m willing to splurge. Check them out for yourself ladies, and if red is not for you, they come in black with a cheetah print on the vamp; an equally stunning shoe but not as bold.

mkors-boot
So to Macy’s I go with the intention of ordering these great pumps. When I get there, I spy these Michael Kors ankle boots. They screamed “Take me with you!” It’s the only pair they have. They were ordered on-line and returned to the store. The boots are a bit pricey, at $157, which is down from $225, but still up there for me. The cool color of these suede boots makes it an easy match for lots of fall outfits. Paired with skinny jeans and a bulky sweater, these will be great!
So having spied these fabulous boots, tried them on and wouldn’t you know – a perfect fit! But I really came to get the red shoes – so what do I do? I get the boots and put the red shoes back on my wish list. Maybe I’ll find these awesome shoes under the Christmas tree this year!

How to wear high heels…

Posted on October 10, 2013 by kmwohl@theloveofshoes.com Posted in Uncategorized .

What’s trending for Fall and Winter 2013 is stilettos. Also there is a trend for even higher heels than seen previously. Given both of those, I thought it might be a good idea to talk about the “how to” for wearing high heels. You don’t have to simply “grin and bear it” when it comes to wearing those fabulous heels, nor do you have to give them up!

Wear the right size shoe
– seems like a no brainer to me, but many of us may not be sporting a shoe in the correct size. As many of you many of noticed, your foot changes size over the years, especially after childbirth. Your foot can change as much as a full size. Make sure you get your foot measured, but also make sure the shoe is comfortable. Not all shoes fit the same. If you’re not sure, try on a half size bigger or small to compare and get the one that’s most comfortable.

Know your foot type – a doctor can certainly tell you your foot type, flat footed, high arched or neutral/normal. An easy test to determine your foot type, (if you don’t know) is to wet your foot and step on a colored piece of paper. The print left will show you if you how high your arch may be or how much of your foot leaves a print.

Thicker heels are better – the pencil thin heels can cause the foot to wobble which in turn can cause problems with your ankles, knees, hips and back. Although the experts advise the thicker chunkier heels, I still love the pencil thin heels of stilettos. If you are like me and are going to wear the thin heels, have flats that you can slip on for long walks (to and from the car), and make sure you slip off the shoes, roll your ankles and flex your feet occasionally.

Go for thicker soles or a platform – a thicker or cushiony sole will absorb more impact when you walk and make the shoe more comfortable. Add an insole to the shoe for added cushion. The gel pads for the ball of the foot are great!

A shoe with a high vamp may help steady the foot when wearing high heels and make the shoe more comfortable. A wide ankle strap is an option for added support. Also, a high vamp might be the style of shoe for you if you are prone to blisters and friction. The high vamp will keep your foot more securely in the shoe and limit movement when you walk.

What’s trending for Fall & Winter 2013?

Posted on August 31, 2013 by kmwohl@theloveofshoes.com Posted in Uncategorized .

I am so happy to say that my all time favorite is trending – the pointy toed stiletto!!!!

Also trending – velvet shoes for evening, bling and embellishments galore and lastly platforms look to be on the way out. Bold colors and animal prints especially leopard are in. Boots and booties will showcase shearling in all the right places. Lastly, over the knee boots will be here while fashion sneakers stick around going bold with lots of color and pattern.

Best options to add to your collection:

  1. A classic black pointy toed stiletto.
  2. A classic stiletto pump in a fabulous leopard print. The popular color for Fall is black, and nothing makes a little black dress more chic than a pair of leopard shoes.

As stated in my book, “every woman needs an animal print shoe.” Why, because the “leopard pump” is now considered to be an all time classic fashion item. These awesome prints have been on the scene since the late 1940’s and I’d be willing to bet they’ll be around for many years to come. A classic animal print shoe will serve you well.

Look for sky high heels ladies. Looks like these great pumps will be reaching heights of 7 inches. Although fabulous looking, please be cautious. These heel heights will be hard on the arches, ankles, knees and potentially backs. Always have a back up pair of shoes if you opt for these heights.

For those who fear the sky high heel, you are in luck because also trending is the timeless ballerina flat bumped up a notch. This season you’ll be seeing lots of bling, bows, feathers, ruffles and a variety of other “things” added to this staple.

Bold and edgy cage/gladiator booties are still on trend. You’ll see them with stiletto heels and refined feminine design.

Cork looks to be out and wood is in. You’ll see lighter wooden heels and soles to compliment the darker hued vamps.

Robert Frost said, “You have miles to go before you sleep.” I say, “You have miles to go before you sleep, so sport a great pair of shoes while on that trek!”
